The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a national organization that works in courts, legislatures, and communities “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States.”  The ACLU also works to extend rights to people who have traditionally been denied rights; these groups of people include: people of color, women, lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgender people, prisoners, and people with disabilities.  Stanford University’s ACLU Chapter seeks to both collaborate with the ACLU of Northern California and to focus on civil liberties issues that affect the university’s campus and the student body directly.
